A night zoo
„Sulawesi“ is a project of our Zoo. Its story began in 1999. In the summer
of that year the Děčín Town Council endorsed on request of the zoo a renting of a non-housing room in the
house no.19 on Teplická street for purposes of the sale of souvenirs and animal breeding
and exhibition. Děčín Zoo got a possibility to address even more persons interested
in nature and animals. Following necessary adjustments and in cooperation with
the Management of Houses of Děčín Town and Labour Office a gift-shop and
the first small animal display of exotic Prevost squirrel was opened on 15th
November 1999. Subsequently, on 5th February 2000 another display was opened, this time for night animals - slender loris (Nycticebus coucang)
and Egyptian fruit bat (Rousettus aegyptiacus) who were eventually replaced
by no less interesting species of tiny deer out
of south-east Asia, the lesser mouse deer (Tragulus javanicus). In these days
you can find above mentioned lesser mouse deer and Pygmy small loris (Nycticebus pygmaeus) there. In
the day-time the display is lit with red lights so
that visitors can observe the animals in the active period. During
the months April - June 2003 construction work was made in front part of
Sulawesi and on 27th June new terrariums called "The Reptiles' Life"
were festively opened there. You can see Chinese
water dragons (Physignathus cocincinus), Green tree python (Morelia viridis),
Taiwanese grass-snake (Elaphe taeniura friesei) and Timor python (Python
timorensis) there. In case there are money available for renewal and
reconstruction of the next sections of the house, the animals displays will be
extended by exhibits that are absent in the zoo for a long time: aquarium animals, insects and also other night animals. In the most upper floor
a quarter for informative and educational activity should
arise.
No entrance fee to the exhibit for the Zoo visitors with the valid ticket!
Entrance fee for other visitors: adults CZK 10,- , children CZK 5,-
